268 (who?)

you told me once that a strike of lightning
is five times hotter than the surface of the sun.

and so if i am the sky
then you are the storm,
flawlessly constructed and
elaborately designed to strike me
when i'm broken.

except lightning never strikes
the same place twice,
and your fist has struck
the flesh above my cheekbone
more times than i can count.

"the earth is number two,
and heaven is number three,"
you told me once, as you slipped
your hand beneath my skirt.
your other hand was on the wheel,
guiding us through the storm.

"—because the earth was created first,"
you would tell me,
although i didn't want
to believe it.
"heaven was just an afterthought."

your hand was warm,
and your touch was electric.
i did nothing as you caressed
my inner thigh, and i stood still
as you reached for more.
i allowed you.
i had no choice.

the rain fell on the windshield
like a map of confused roads
leading nowhere,
and i thought quietly to myself
as our silence burned the bridges.

you never told me number one,
and you thought i didn't know.
but i did.

i did.

you are the thunderstorms on venus
and the hurricanes on jupiter
that last for hundreds of years.

you are the storm that makes
the monks ring their bells
and the aztecs mourn
and the people run from Sullivan.

you are the lightning on saturn,
and you will never
leave the clouds.

hell is number one.
earth is number two.
heaven is number three.

hell was created before
there was even an earth,
and earth was created
before there was even a heaven,
and it's okay.

because we can still
be dreamers.

and we can tell ourselves
that heaven was created for
the earth,
and i can pretend to still believe
that a pearl is created
every time lightning strikes an ocean
(like i did when i was little)
and you can pretend to be
the promise after the storm.

you can pretend to love me,
and it's okay.

you told me once that a single hurricane
has more power than an atomic bomb.

and so if i am the earth
then you are the bomb,
imperfectly constructed and
elaborately designed to strike me
when i'm broken.

only this time,
bombs strike everything.
even you.

and so if i am the earth
and you are the bomb,
then this time we will die together.

except nature is immortal,
and i will have a thousand years
to correct myself.

you are mortal,
and you will only have a lifetime
to fix you.

so when the summer storms come
and Indra saunters forward
with a bolt in his hand
and rage in his eye
and flakes of fire rip through the sky,
i will be there.
because i am not scared
of lightning
or thunder
or you.

and while the aztecs cry
and Sullivan runs for cover
and the monks turn to their bells,
i will turn to the earth.

i will travel to the tropics
and climb the tallest tree on the
highest mountain, with
lightning rods in my hands
and magnets in my pockets
and scream.

I wrote this a few weeks ago, and I kept thinking to myself that I should upload this at the right time. But I don't know when the right time is, and I'm sick of waiting. I even contemplated posting this at 12:00 midnight.

Things I learned while writing this poem:

1.) lightning often strikes the same place twice.
2.) the odds of being struck by lightning is 1 in 1,107,143, and yet Roy Sullivan was a man who was struck by lightning 8 times.
3.) Venus has thunderstorms; Saturn has lightning.
4.) there is currently a hurricane on Jupiter, and it has lasted for more than 300 years.
5.) the monks used to ring their bells when the storms came, thinking it would fend off the evil spirits.
6.) aztecs believed a person died every time lightning struck.
7.) there is such a thing as ball lightning.
8.) the greeks used to believe a pearl was created every time lightning struck the ocean.
9.) a single hurricane has more power than 10 atomic bombs.
10.) lightning and thunderstorms are more common in the tropics.

The amount of research going into writing something is not nearly important as how it is applied. What a creative and incredible piece of work. I will definitely have to watch you for this! Thanks for sharing.

I have to say this is very thought provoking and quite imaginative as well. There are plenty of references ranging from science and mythology/history and that is what makes it all the more interesting in terms of imagery and metaphors. Very well done! :D

Thank you so much for the sweet comment. And yes, I'm a huge fan of everything historical & mythological... it's pretty much the foundation for most of my work, so I'm glad you liked the references! :)

I really appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. :tighthug: It means a lot to me.
