she was a girl.

she ran with the moon,
chased fireflies in the bluegrass, and
watched the reflection of sunsets in rain puddles.

                        her name was Alice,
                        and she was a girl.

--

but to the dragonflies she was a queen,
and to the mirror she was a sister.
the moon was her prince, and the
blinking windows were the eyes
that kept her safe.

she spent her nights making wishes, and she
dragged her fingers along the shooting stars
that were tangled with her vertebrae.

                        her name was Alice,
                        and she was a girl.

--

her body was a river
her mind was an ocean
and her heart was the sky.

she lived in a world where
doves flew in the sea and
whales swam in the moonlight,
and in a universe where
raindrops fell like bombs
and stars fell like gumdrops.

her body was a shadow
her mind was a fire
and her heart was a star—

she was a super nova, and
nothing could hold her back.

                        her name was Alice,
                        and she was a girl.

--

"if you see the Water-Bearer
drift from the Sea,
then you will die in the ocean."

"if you see Little Horse
shine as bright as the sun,
you will die by the hand
of Poseidon's trident."

--

Alice believed in constellations,
and was convinced that
they could predict the future.

"They say i will die at an age
as old as the mountains—
with stardust on my eyelids,
a world in my hands,
and heaven on my mind."

but even in the vastness of the constellations
there was not a single star that could predict
death by a woven rope
and a kitchen knife.

                        her name was Alice,
                        and she was a girl.

--

maybe she read the stars the wrong way
or maybe there were too many clouds in the sky,
because now this grey shadow
—once a girl named Alice—
sleeps for eternity at the bottom
of the Eridanus River.

--

she was a girl,

and she died when she was seven
with dirt on her eyelids,
a bloody teddy in her hands,
and her murderer on her mind.

--

                        her name was Alice,
                        and she was a child.

rememberlittleangels.blogspot.…

her name was kristyanna, and she was murdered.
she had an older sister who was with her at the time of the incident, and she is paralyzed for life.

This kind of... took my breath away. I was so enchanted with the visuals you were placing and the sense of wonder you sewed but I felt that darkness creeping in. Still, I was not expecting what happened in the end. This is how you make a statement <3

I love the imagery, how you compare her to the beauty that is all around us. It gives her this almost god-like quality, making her out to be something infinite and indestructible. She was vast and complex, worth more than all the riches in the world, and she was viciously taken. It’s disgusting that we live in a world where children die. There are so many like this girl, so many bright minds snuffed out too soon. The description of the blood teddy bear was particularly poignant. Stolen innocence… so tragic.

The repetition of “her name was Alice, and she was a girl” was brilliant. Every time I read it I kept thinking, She was a human being… with a name… with all the energy and passion of the universe and the dust of stars in her little body. And she was.

Stunning poem, dear. Harrowing and all too real, and alive in a way few poems are.

Thank you so much for your sweet comment.

I agree, she had a whole life ahead of her. She deserved so much more than the horrific death she was given... the world can be a cruel place. My heart also goes out to her sister, neither of them deserved what happened.

I'm glad you found it so moving, it means a lot to me. I really appreciate you taking the time to read and comment, it's a big compliment to get praise from such a great writer as yourself! Thank you. :huggle:

My gosh, I'm in near tears!

This is beyond beautiful, Elizabeth. You have quite a gift with words. Please keep writing. Never ever stop.

As for the horrible tale of the "little girl"....what a world we live in where three year old children get stabbed... I can't even wrap my head around that. Why would they want to kill her? What did she ever do to them? She was three for gods sake! Anyway, those questions are without answers. It was a horrible thing to do, and the world will never be the same without her.

Aw, thank you so much. :iconspazhugplz:

I know, it's such a horrible story. :( I agree with you completely... I don't know how anybody could hurt such a sweet, innocent child. She didn't deserve anything that happened to her... it's truly devastating.

Thank you so much for your kind words, it's greatly appreciated. :huggle:

This poem, and the story behind it, just broke my heart. For those that doubt that evil exists, I offer such things as "Exhibit 1," and rest my case.

I've heard of several incidents over the past year where young children have been tortured or murdered by other children. It would be easy to accept the premise that "Generation X" or "Y" is just going to ruin. Then I read all the amazing poems and witness all the amazing artwork on sites like this and others, by persons of all ages; and I have a new theory: I think we're just entering an age of extremes. An age of extreme intelligence in some, and extreme ignorance in others; sometimes willful ignorance, sometimes not. Events of extreme kindness, and events of sheer horror more brutal than any piece of fiction. Extreme weather shifts.

A few years ago, everything started being marketed as "extreme." "EXTREME energy!!," etc. Watch the patterns, and oftentimes life DOES imitate art; not always the other way around. What was once science fiction is now reality. Life is now extreme, and becoming more so exponentially.

It's terrifying to see the dark side of it become even darker; but inspiring and encouraging to be reminded of the other side through poetry such as yours; which cover tragedies, but with a deep level of compassion, in an attempt to find and give catharsis in the face of such darkness.

Yes... I've heard many cases of children or murdered, it's extremely tragic. The world can sometimes be a very cruel place, unfortunately. :( And I agree completely... it's as if the world has been divided into extremes. You're not alone, I've noticed it, too.

I'm really glad you liked it... thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment, I really appreciate it. :)

Thank you for your support!
